Norwalk now has four full-time employees to staff the station during hours that lack paid on-call staff availability. Rapid population growth - mostly among commuters, combined with a significant increase in calls for service has prompted the city to increase career staffing. The Norwalk Fire Department welcomes Firefighter/Paramedic Jenn Vetterick to the department, and congratulates Chief Dustin Huston on his promotion from part-time Battalion Chief to full-time Fire Chief!

Smoke Alarms – Why, Where,
and Which
A smoke alarm is critical for the early detection of a fire
in your home and could mean the difference between life and
death. Fires can occur in a variety of ways and in any room
of your home. But no matter where or how, having a smoke alarm
is the first key step towards your family's safety. click

Warning Sirens
Warning
sirens will be activated if a tornado has been sighted near
Norwalk. A steady 3-minute tone will indicate a tornado warning
and that you should immediately seek shelter in your basement
or an interior room in your house. The Weather Bureau uses
the term tornado watch to mean conditions are such that a tornado
is possible. The sirens will not be sounded for a watch but
will be for a tornado warning (a funnel cloud has been sighted
in the area either by radar or an observer). The sirens are
tested the first Saturday of the month at 1:00 p.m.
Siren locations:
513 W. North Avenue
519 Main Street
599 Gordon Avenue
181 Masteller Road
591 Beardsley Road
1114 East 18th Street
Escaping your home
It may be smoky; getting low may make it easier to breathe
and see. Smoke contains toxic gases which can disorient you
or, at worst, overcome you.
The time it takes to get out depends on many factors including
mobility, helping others, escape route, time of day, smoke,
fire, and the location of the fire relative to you. More
